Introduction

Recognizing that CMU is one of the most prestigious universities in the United States, particularly for its Computer Science Department, and that Tsinghua is one of the best universities in China whose Computer Science Department is ranked first nationally, in order to promote the two universities’ cooperation in scientific research and student training, the two sides currently intend to establish a double degree master’s program in computer science.

The double degree program envisions a successful student candidate being awarded two (i.e., double) master’s level degrees, one degree being awarded by the Computer Science Department of the School of Computer Science of CMU, the Master of Science in Computer Science, and one degree being awarded by the Department of Computer Science and Technology of Tsinghua, the Master of Engineering in Computer Science. All student candidates in the double degree program must satisfy all of the academic and other requirements of both universities in order to receive both degrees.

Student candidates will spend part of their time resident at CMU and part of their time resident at Tsinghua. The duration of the double degree program is two (2) to two and one-half (2½) academic years. Student candidates will spend at least two academic semesters resident at CMU and the remainder resident at Tsinghua. Normally, student candidates will enroll and study the first academic semester while resident at Tsinghua, the next two successive academic semesters while resident at CMU, and the remainder of the next two successive academic semesters while resident at Tsinghua. An alternative schedule of study is where student candidates will enroll and study the first academic semester while resident at CMU, the next three successive academic semesters while resident at Tsinghua, and the last academic semester while resident at CMU.
